Which Niseko base suits your skiing?
Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village and Annupuri share one mountain and one lift pass, but they are not the same trip. What each side is like, how the backcountry gates work, what is new for 2026–27, and where to spend the days off the snow.
6 November 2026
From the top of Niseko the view is all one thing: Mt Yōtei, a near-perfect volcanic cone standing alone across the valley. Turn around and the mountain you are standing on is four ski resorts at once. Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village and Annupuri are linked near the summit and sold on one all-mountain pass. Each has its own village, its own lifts and its own feel at the bottom.
That is the first decision on a Niseko trip, and it shapes everything after it. Get the base right and the week runs itself. Get it wrong and you spend it in shuttle buses.
One mountain, four resorts
Mt Niseko Annupuri tops out at 1,308 m. The lifts stop a little short of that, and the summit is a hike. Niseko sits about 100 km from Sapporo, and the all-mountain pass covers all four resorts. Free shuttles run between Annupuri, Niseko Village and Hirafu for pass holders, with another between Hanazono and Hirafu. Niseko United is also on the Ikon and Mountain Collective passes.
Niseko Moiwa, on the far western shoulder, is a separate resort and not on the all-mountain pass.
Grand Hirafu
The biggest of the four, and the one most people mean when they say “Niseko”. Hirafu has 22 courses over 940 m of vertical, and its longest route runs 5.3 km top to bottom. The main village is here, with most of the restaurants and all of the nightlife. Night skiing runs from 16:00 to 19:00 on 12 courses, some of them ungroomed.
Hanazono
On the north-east side, Hanazono has 12 courses, and its longest, Silver Dream, runs 2,700 m. The 10-person Symphony Gondola opened in December 2021, designed by Pininfarina. Hanazono has good beginner areas, terrain parks and some of the best-known tree skiing on the mountain. The resort says it gets around 15 m of snow a season.
Niseko Village
Niseko Village has 29 courses, 8 lifts and long forest runs. The resort puts its average snowfall at 18 metres. It suits families and skiers who want off-piste powder without a long walk out. For 2026–27 the new eight-person Mori-no Gondola replaces the old Mori-no double chair. Its first phase, to 670 m, opens this season, and the second phase, to about 930 m, follows in 2027.
Annupuri
The western side, and the quietest: 13 courses and 6 lifts, mostly novice and intermediate terrain, with natural onsen at the base. A good choice for a family whose youngest skiers are still finding their feet.

When to go
All four resorts open on 28 November 2026. Niseko Village closes on 4 April, Hanazono on 11 April, and Grand Hirafu and Annupuri ski on until 5 May 2027. Night skiing runs from 12 December to 22 March.
Midwinter is the most reliable time for powder. That is also when the town is fullest: over Christmas, New Year and Lunar New Year, Niseko’s best restaurants book out weeks or months ahead. We book tables when we book the trip. A week in March brings more sun, longer days and an easier time getting a table.
The backcountry, and the Niseko Rules
Niseko once had the highest number of fatal avalanche accidents in Japan. That is why it has the Niseko Rules, in place since 2001. They are short and strict:
- Leave the ski area only through the official gates, and never when a gate is closed.
- Never duck a boundary rope or enter an off-limits area.
- Carry a helmet and an avalanche beacon. A probe and shovel are strongly recommended.
- Primary-school children may go beyond the gates only with an adult.
The penalties are real. Break the rules and you lose your lift pass. If you need rescuing, the search and rescue costs start at ¥100,000. The gates themselves only open for a working avalanche beacon, not a phone. The Niseko Avalanche Institute publishes a daily report, and some areas, including Harunotaki, Yunosawa and the Anbetsu Valley, are closed permanently.
For anyone planning to ski beyond the gates, we book a certified guide. They know which gates are open that morning, where the snow has settled, and where it has not.
New on the mountain for 2026–27
- Mori-no Gondola, Niseko Village: phase one (to 670 m) opens this season.
- Ace #3, Grand Hirafu: upgraded from a double chair to a hooded quad, more than doubling capacity.
- King #3 Six, Grand Hirafu: opened last season.
- Annupuri gondola: the 1985 gondola is due to be fully replaced before the 2028–29 season.
Off the mountain
- Onsen. Niseko Konbu Onsen, about 15 minutes by car from JR Niseko Station, is one of the area’s largest hot-spring areas and a designated National Health Onsen Resort. Annupuri has natural onsen at its base. Goshiki Onsen, open since 1930, is on Route 58, which closes in winter, so save it for a summer visit.
- Eating. Hirafu has the widest choice of restaurants, and Kutchan, the town below, is known for its potatoes. Book the best tables when you book the trip.
- Snow days. Snowshoeing, snowmobiling and snow tubing fill a rest day. So does a day trip to Otaru’s canal.
Getting there
Niseko is about two hours from New Chitose Airport by private car. Niseko Tourism says closer to two and a half, and in heavy snow it can be longer. The direct bus takes about two and a half hours, and train plus bus about three. On a private trip, your driver meets you at arrivals and the bags go in the back. You are at the chalet in time for dinner.
How we plan it
We start with your group. Who is skiing, at what level, and how far from the lifts you want to be. Then we choose the side of the mountain and the chalet or hotel to match. We book the lessons, guides, gear and dinner reservations, and add a few nights elsewhere in Hokkaido if you want them. Rusutsu is 40 minutes away and makes an easy second base. See our Hokkaido ski holidays for how it all fits together.
